Jabalpur: A Jabalpur-based BJP leader, who is also an anti-drug activist, was seriously injured after three men allegedly stabbed him here over an old enmity, police said on Monday.
The condition of BJP leader Mangal Siddique (42) was out of danger and the three attackers were arrested on Monday, Aadhartal police station in-charge Vijay Kumar Vishwakarma told PTI.
The incident took place around midnight on Sunday in the Aadhartal police station area of Jabalpur, police said. Vishwakarma said the three alleged attackers, Waseem Ali, Waseem Bangar and Monu Ansari, aged between 30 and 35, were arrested hours after the attack in which Siddiq was injured near his throat.
He added that the victim was taken to a local hospital from where he was transferred to Jabalpur Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment. The police officer said that the attack appeared to be the result of an old enmity, but the investigation was ongoing from all angles.
“We are interrogating the accused and investigating the case from all angles,” Vishwakarma said. He added that the accused were charged under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code in connection with attempt to murder.
Meanwhile, former Jabalpur BJP president GS Thakur told reporters that Siddique is an anti-drug activist and has been organizing protests in the city against the illegal drug trade.
“He is one of our senior workers and a former head of the mandal (sub-district administrative unit). He may have been attacked because of his influential stand against drug dealers,” he said.
“This is an attack on people who are raising their voices against the illegal drug trade. BJP workers are angry over the attack on Siddique,” Thakur added.
