Soren’s JMM wrested two ST seats in Ranchi – Khunti and Torpa – from the BJP by a huge vote margin.
In fact, Khunti has been a stronghold of BJP for the last 20 years, party candidate Neelkanth Singh Munda has been elected MLA from this seat for five consecutive times. However, this time he has lost to JMM’s Ram Surya Munda by at least 41,000 seats.
Khunti, which was earlier part of Ranchi seat, became a separate seat in 2007.
While the Congress has managed to retain all the ST seats it won in 2019, it has also gained the Mandar seat in Ranchi district, which was earlier held by the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik).
With this, except Champai Soren’s Seraikela seat, BJP seems to be completely wiped out in the tribal dominated areas of Jharkhand.
