Abhishek Bachchan’s latest movie I want to talk, Directed by Shoojit Sircar, the film is based on the life of Arjun Sen and his fight with cancer. Actor, director and Sen sat together The Quint To talk about the film, how the film enriched the actor, and much more.
Abhishek Bachchan says, “For the last 6-7 years, why do I choose a particular film or genre or producer… a big part of that decision is based on what I can learn from that experience.” , “This was not the norm at the beginning of my career; Then it was just the excitement of doing what you do and wanting to be successful. The definition of success changes with time and experience.”
The actor further adds that he wanted to work with Sarkar because he felt he could ‘learn’ from the filmmaker.
Bachchan talks about dealing with insecurity as an actor, “We don’t have the luxury of security; We struggle with this every moment. Some of us are adept at hiding it or doing so. Actors struggle with this every moment because your work is based on validation. Your film is successful when someone tells you it is successful.”
Sircar, who has also directed Amitabh Bachchan in the past, talks about the similarities between the two actors and says, “I go with a script; It’s like the Bible to me. There is very little scope for the actor and I to stray away from the script. It’s like that with Amitabh Bachchan…you pick up any page of the script, he knows exactly what’s on the page. He (Abhishek Bachchan) is a genius in terms of lines, just like Mr Bachchan. Abhishek is also a first take or take-two actor.
In one of the most poignant scenes I want to talk, Sen’s daughter asked him if he would dance at her wedding even though doctors had given him only 100 days to live.
Talking about this moment, Sen says, “Based on the doctors, I have less than 100 days to live. Before you die, you can lie; This is an amazing thing that I realized. There was a positivity that somehow came in because once I said yes, he trusted me. Now it was not about the wedding or the dance. For a three-year-old girl, once she believes you, a lie becomes reality. It was all about being there for my daughter as long as I could and making every day count.”
Bachchan shared the advice given by his father and grandfather and how he deals with ‘unpleasant things’ on social media. He also talks about what the audience wants from an actor.
