Filmmaker Payal Kapadia, whose film All We Imagine as Light won the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, sat down with The Quint to talk about the film, the way Mumbai is portrayed in the film, her favorite scene , how the Indian film industry can help independent filmmakers and much more.
Speaking about the opening sequence of the film, Kapadia said,
In one particularly poignant scene, Prabha, played by Kani Kushruti, interacts with a man who seems to exist between the realms of reality and imagination. “There are a lot of male characters in this film who don’t exist,” Kapadia told The Quint, “They are ghostly beings who come and go but they still hold on to these women. So I did not need her husband to allow her (Prabha) to be locked up; I needed her to find it out for herself.”
When asked how the Indian film industry can help independent filmmakers, Kapadia said, “I think what’s happening with Spirit and my film is something that other big filmmakers and actors are doing with independent films. Can do for. For example, Rishabh Shetty is supporting the local cinema of Karnataka a lot because our films are very short; They can be made. It would be great if the big studios were willing to set aside some money to support independent films without burning a hole in their pockets.
