“Even though I am used to pressure and threats, this time, I was shocked when I read the allegations against me.”
Mohammad Zubair, a leading fact-checker and co-founder of AltNews, expressed surprise at the Uttar Pradesh Police not only registering a case against him but also adding serious charges of sedition.
Speaking to The Quint, Zubair recalled how he had become accustomed to threats and complaints filed in the past, but the UP Police informed the Allahabad High Court on November 26 that they had invoked the Indian Penal Code (BNS). Section 152 has been added – “Act prejudicial to the unity, sovereignty and integrity of India”, punishable with life imprisonment or a jail term up to seven years and fine.
It is noteworthy that on December 3, the bench of Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Prashant Kumar of Allahabad High Court withdrew from hearing Petition filed by Zubair seeking protection from arrest in the case.
