Author, diplomat and former Member of Parliament, Pawan K Verma, in his column Hindustan Times Mirza Asadullah Khan writes about Ghalib’s legacy ahead of his 227th birth anniversary.

He writes: “Ghalib was the quintessential Sufi. Interestingly, one sign of his transcendence from traditional religion was that when he died there was confusion over whether the funeral should be according to Shia or Sunni rites. No one was sure whether he should go or not, and, frankly, I believe he would have been equally happy if he had been cremated according to Hindu rites.”
