Nazira’s voice wavered as she spoke to me about the power cuts in Tangmarg in Kashmir’s Baramulla district, where she lives with her 16-year-old daughter. “I want my daughter to do better in her board exams, but I don’t see that happening,” says Nazira, a private school teacher.
In the middle of Chillai Kalan, the harshest period of winter from 21 December to 29 January, Kashmir turns into a snowy wonderland that attracts tourists from all over the world.
“Our exams are scheduled in February, and it is already very hard to study in this cold. But it is even worse when you do not get electricity for 4-5 hours a day and sometimes more. How can we prepare for our exams in the dark?” asks Shayan Bukhari, a Class 11 student from Srinagar.
