His superior, DSP Rajesh Tomar (Rahul Bhat), commanding and selfish, still spends his time imparting words of wisdom to Gupta – much of it sounds condescending but that doesn’t mean it isn’t helpful. Over the years, certainly hardened by the demands of his job, he has come to a very basic realization – power and prestige are everything.
“We don’t run jails, we run prisoners,” is his first briefing to Gupta and two men who join him that day – the fiery Vipin Dahiya (Anurag Thakur) who has no problem with violence and the heavy-handed Shivraj Singh Mangat (Paramveer Singh Cheema) who presents the kind of impressive personality that everyone expects from the profession. Kapoor’s calmness is brilliantly matched by Thakur, who plays his role like a flash of lightning, and Mangat is also excellent.
power is everywhere black warrant – Direct or indirect. Out of 1300 prisoners, 1000 are undertrials and many live in terror even inside the jail. The power structure inside Tihar includes several gangs and the methods they adopt to create a system of ‘fear’ and subordination. Episode 2, titled ‘Phansi Koti’, is where the show glimpses a smokescreen. The episode ends with the hanging of Ranga-Billa, accused in the Geeta and Sanjay Chopra kidnapping case. Things don’t go according to plan and Gupta is reminded of a horrifying reality – morality has become blurred behind these walls.
