As long as the Hearst Fire turned in a different direction, we were reassured. My roommate had to catch a flight to Michigan, so we decided to return to campus. With Burbank Airport (in LA) closed, we assumed flights might be delayed. Public transportation seemed unreliable due to the winds, so we planned to travel back the next evening.
On January 9, as the Hearst Fire began to be contained, we received another warning that winds would become strong again that evening. We didn’t want to risk getting stranded, so we decided to leave immediately. Hastily packing our bags, we took a $200 Uber ride to Los Angeles International Airport, reflecting how unpredictable the situation was – and how little money we had left. But we made it.
I thought about those who had lost everything, about those who were sharing GoFundMe links, and about the painful reality they now faced. For now, we pray for their well-being and our safety as we prepare to resume school on Monday.
(As of January 13, at least 24 people have died in the wildfire.)
