Both of these narrative threads fade into the background, existing only to provide context to the characters. So when Janaki is tortured after seeing Govind in distress, you get the idea on paper (and because this is Bollywood and we have seen it before) but the gravity of the situation doesn’t show on screen.
We don’t spend enough time with these characters to understand their chemistry, especially since when we last met Janaki, Govind had painted her face despite repeatedly scolding her.
Soon they are riding horses off into the sunset (the horses get a love story of their own) and almost everyone in the village is deeply aware of this budding romance but somehow no one is doing anything active against it. Does not take steps. If we believe that the powerful sacrifice morality to maintain class divisions, then why not make them behave characterfully?
