‘The suspect does not have valid Indian documents’
At a press conference, Zone 9 Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dixit Gedam said, “Preliminary evidence suggests that the accused is of Bangladeshi origin. He entered India illegally and changed his name. He was using the name Vijay Das.” He had come to Mumbai 5-6 months ago and then stayed in the surrounding areas of Mumbai.
DCP Gedam told the media that the accused appears to be a Bangladeshi national and does not have any “valid Indian document”.
According to the police, the accused had entered the famous actor’s house with the intention of stealing. The incident took place on January 16 at around 2:00 am, during which Saif Ali Khan was attacked and suffered serious injuries.
DCP Gedam said the accused would be produced in court, adding, “We will seek police custody. We suspect that the accused is of Bangladeshi origin and hence, we have also invoked relevant sections of the Passport Act.”
Maharashtra Minority Commission Chairman Pyare Khan said, “I came to know that the accused is a Bangladeshi. The police and the government are investigating it. Those who are saying that the law and order situation is not good here, it is not right. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is working for the development of all.”
