Although it failed to win any of those two seats, AIMIM has given an important statement by fielding two persons charged under UAPA.
This is the first time political prisoners have become an important political plank among Muslims (outside Kashmir). The Lok Sabha campaign of independent MPs Amritpal Singh and Engineer Rashid was important in this context.
It is also a new approach to AIMIM. So far, the party has trusted to bring strong Muslim leaders of other parties in its expansion efforts outside Hyderabad, whether Akhtarul Iman in Bihar, Mufti Ismail Abdul Khalik in Malegaon, Maharashtra or its former leader like Ziyar Rehman Barak and Guddu land in Jamali.
The party has then brought professionals like Syed Imtiaz Jalil and Waris Pathan. In particular, Jalil has chased a separate brand of politics that involves making common causes with Ambedkarite Dalits and Marathas of other communities.
This is the first time the party has tried to tap in the energy of civil society in its campaign. According to most accounts, the Schifa-ur-Remon’s campaign in Okhla took themselves life with independent activists and citizens, who raised the campaign on their own.
This is a strong route for AIMIM as its politics develops with its national expansion efforts.
