Sadly, it is still very common to evaluate violence, life and death in addition to the meat and blood of humans involved.
In a similar vein, the rights of minorities are often debated as they were more properly, and thus, subordinate to majority life.
For all those who increase the self-explosion of a woman on their husband’s death, one wants to ask if they can imagine their mother or sister to help on the funeral pyre. There is no doubt that there will be people who emphasize that they can.
But for the rest, perhaps such an exercise can work to focus on abstract disintegration on sati or tradition – untouched by the fire of death – women in all their vibrant elements.
