On February 28, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared a list of people with duplicate epic numbers in West Bengal voter roles, and other states like Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
For reference, an epic or photo identity card of voters that carries out the epic number-a 10-matched unique identification number assigned by the Election Commission of India to each registered voter.
This number is necessary to cast votes and acts as a proof of a person’s registration as a voter.
Therefore, two people are unlikely to have the same epic number.
The pole body, however, issued an explanation, stating that “the epic number of repetition does not do duplicate/fake voters.”
It states, “Despite the epic number, any electoral can only cast a vote at its nominated polling station in its respective constituency in the state where they are nominated in electoral roles.”
