Aamir Khan will turn 60 on March 14, 2025. For his special occasion, PVR INOX announced a special film festival titled, Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar. This would celebrate Aamir’s contribution to the Hindi cinema. Well, the trailer launch of the film festival was attended by renowned lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar. The lyricist questioned the actor on why South movies that were dubbed in Hindi did way better than Hindi films. Aamr revealed how the Hindi film industry has snubbed its own business.
Aamir Khan blames OTT film releases for theatrical release failure
Well, the South vs Bollywood debate has been going on for a long time. South movies like the Baahubali franchise, KGF franchise, Pushpa franchise, RRR, Kalki 2898 AD, and many more did not rake well at the box office. Aamir blamed the OTT releases of movies weeks before the theatrical release took place. In his words:
“According to me, the problem that we are facing is something different. What we are doing is that we are telling the audience, come and buy the ticket, and even if you don’t, then in eight weeks we will come to your houses (OTT release). This is our business model. I go to theatres for fancy. Earlier, I went to theatres because I wanted to watch the film. Now, I can watch it anywhere. I am carrying it in my pocket. So, we have killed our own business. How can we sell the same thing twice?”
Javed Akhtar questions why the Hindi film industry is on backfoot
Javed had questioned Aamir about why the Hindi film industry was on the backfoot. Audiences are not getting connected by the movies, and the South dubbed movie heroes are not even known in North India. He even questioned how dubbed south movies make Rs 600-700 crore. In his words:
“Hamari bhi ek kaad filmein jo chali hai woh bhi direct ki hui hai South walo ki. Kya reason hai? What has gone wrong with our people?”
Aamir Khan reveals why Hindi films nowadays are not fancy
Aamir, who was the hero of the blockbuster movie Lagaan, revealed that Hindi movies were not fancy. He said that one of the reasons was also that perhaps writers and directors in Hindi cinema were trying to entertain an audience which was slightly finer. Aamir added:
“They have forgotten their roots, the basic emotion, the sharper emotions. Revenge is a strong emotion, it comes out very strongly. But, doubt is a very halka emotion. I am trying to show what doubt is so that is a less attractive emotion.”

Aamir also shared that Hindi moviemakers were now focusing on making movies for multiplexes. The Laal Singh Chadha actor noted that south films that become super hit, are typically what we used to call single screens (films); very mass, very hard-hitting, and he also thinks that Hindi filmmakers are trying to shift their concentration more towards multiplex films. However, the fact is that he never thought in this dimension and shared that his film Dangal was a multiplex film and a mass film.
