The man refused to speak Marathi at D-Mart in Pune
While the popular proverb, ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do,’ suggests that one should make adjustments in accordance with their surroundings. Netizens are left to wonder if a person has the right to choose the language they want to speak. A video posted on social media showed two men arguing over the language they speak.
While the man in the video spoke in Hindi, the man behind the camera could be heard speaking in Marathi. The latter was seen repeatedly asking the man in the video to speak in Marathi. However, he put his foot down and stated:
“Hindi hi bolenge. Social media pe daalo, kisi pe daalo. Ye galat tareeka hai tumhaara.”
Soon, the two broke into a fight, with the Hindi speaker trying to smack the recording device out of the other man’s hand. He was soon stopped by others present in the store. However, the man was agitated by the recording and the unpleasant interaction and stated, “Merese bina pooche na mobile pe nahi bana sakta.”

Netizens react to the video
Soon, the video went viral on social media, and netizens chimed in to share their opinion on the same. A user penned, “We are fighting because someone is not speaking the language we speak. Does that make sense?” Another wrote, “Bhai kya ho raha desh ko, itna issue hai language ka ek kaam karo sare states apne apne states ka travelling band karwa do, phir khelo isolation isolation.” A comment can be read as:
“Language should be an individual’s choice. If Marathi people don’t want Hindi to be imposed on them, similarly, Hindi people don’t want Marathi to be imposed on them. The same goes for Kannada. Saying things like you should leave the place if you don’t speak the regional language is such a baseless bullshit. It’s my country; I will live where I want, dude.”
However, that is not all. Some users even expressed how difficult it would be to travel if one had to learn a new language every time they have to shift to a different region. A user penned, “Non Sense.. Is language important, or is the way you communicate important? With this, do we have to learn 20 official regional languages?” Another comment read, “What the hell? Now, we’ll put a stop to the LANGUAGE a person speaks. Where the hell are we heading as a nation? Pure harassment!” A user wrote:
“How does it logically affect you if he speaks Hindi? Do you pay his bills? Do you Provide a Job? The audacity people have of entitlement. Based on what????Unnecessary Hierarchy, Pride, ego etc. Stop forcing people to do what you want. Every human is a free human to do whatever, speak whatever, believe whatever as long as it doesn’t involve abuse in any form, hatred, demeaning, disrespect or destruction towards another human being. STOP. If anything, RESPECT HUMANS.”
