New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut hit out at comedian Kunal Kamra for insulting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in the name of comedy.
The BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi Lok Sabha said people should not insult others for ‘two-minutes’ of fame.
“We need to think where our society is heading when someone does this just for two minutes of fame…You might be anyone, but insulting and defaming someone…A person for whom his/her respect is everything, and you insult and disregard them…Who are these people, and what are their credentials? If they can write, they should do so in literature…Abusing people and our culture in the name of comedy…This has been done legally, but what had been done (demolishing of her bungalow) to me was illegally done so I won’t compare the two incidents,” Ranaut told reporters outside Parliament.
On Sunday, Kunal Kamra performed his stand up comedy titled ‘Naya Bharat’ (New India) at the Habitat Studio at Mumbai’s Unicontinental hotel wherein he took a satirical stand on the current political conditions. For Maharashtra, he featured a song where he called Shinde a ‘gaddar’ (traitor).
“Whether you agree with someone or not, making fun of them, especially mocking an illegal incident that happened to me, is not right. I won’t compare that incident with this because that was illegal, while this is completely legal… Who are these people mocking him? What credentials do they have? What have they achieved in life?” Ranaut asked.
Slamming Kamra, she said ‘to dishonour anyone is not right… in the name of comedy you are disregarding someone’s work’.
The BJP MP said disgracing anyone in the name of comedy is in bad taste. “You may be anyone, but disrespecting anyone (is not good). You are disgracing someone in the name of comedy, you are disregarding what all he has done. Shinde ji used to drive an auto rickshaw long ago and he has achieved so much on his own. What are Kunal Kamra’s credentials?”
The BJP MP said there could be repercussions for what an individual says. “Like (Maharashtra CM Devendra) Fadnavis ji said we have to take some responsibility for what we say. There could be repercussions. Would you stand by that when you are questioned legally,” she asked.
