Lovingly known as ‘laal ettan’, the mega star of the Malayalam industry, Mohanlal is listed as one of the greatest actors of the Indian film industry. A global icon, Mohanlal’s fandom has crossed borders and the actor’s popularity has been untamed for many decades now. Named as one of ‘the men who changed the face of the Indian cinema’, Mohanlal has acted in over 400 films in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
In 2009, Mohanlal became the first Indian actor to be awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army. It was in 1978, when Mohanlal made his acting debut in the Malayalam film, Thiranottam at the age of 18 but the film was delayed. However, he made his screen debut with the film, Manjil Virinja Pookkal, where he played an antagonist.
Mohanlal continued to play many negative roles in the initial stages of his career. However, Rajavinte Makan garnered him the much-deserved applause in the industry. The five times National Award winner established himself as a bankable actor with films like Iruvar, Kireedam, Vanaprastham, Thazhvaram, Devasuram, Pulimurugan, Drishyam, Oppam, Lucifer and many more.
Mohanlal has always been a popular figure among females as the actor is loved for his romantic roles on-screen. Be it ‘Jayakrishnan’ in Thoovanathumbikal, ‘Vishnu’ in Chitram or ‘Bobby’ in Minnaram, Mohanlal has often captivated the hearts of his millions of female fans. However, it was his loyal fan, Suchitra, who made a permanent place in his heart.

It was on April 28, 1988, when Mohanlal married Suchitra Balaji, daughter of Tamil film producer, K. Balaji. The wedding, which took place in the actor’s hometown, Thiruvananthapuram, saw many leading names in the film industry. We have stumbled upon an unseen video of Mohanlal and Suchitra’s wedding, which was attended by Mollywood’s biggest superstar, Prem Nazir.
Many actors like Rahman, Suresh Gopi, Sukumaran, Monisha, Jagadish, Mukesh and various others attended the event. Malayalam film’s legend and Mohanlal’s close aide, Mammooty attended the event with his wife, Sulfath and was seen leaving the venue after the function. In the glimpses, Mohanlal was seen blushing while Suchitra accompanied him at the mandap. The couple was seen performing their wedding rituals.
Suchitra hated Mohanlal initially
Mohanlal started his career by playing negative roles. When Suchitra saw one or two films in which Mohanlal played the role of a villain, she started hating him. However, later, she realised that he was so good at his job that one could not separate the character from him. Suchitra once talked about the same and said:
“When I saw him in the first movie Manjil Virinja Pookkal, I hated him. I used to hate him whenever he featured the role of a villain. But I knew that I disliked him because he was so perfect in his job. After watching ‘Ente Mammattikuttiyammakku’, I started to like him. Slowly, I fell in love with him and we got married. Today, he is my favourite actor.”
Mohanlal considers his wife, Suchitra as his lucky charm
Soon after seeing Mohanlal’s films, Suchitra fell in love with the actor. She wrote letters and greetings to the actor. The duo met through a common friend and clicked instantly. Initially, Mohanlal and Suchitra’s wedding got cancelled duo to a mismatch in their horoscope. But later, the astrologer confessed it was a mistake, and the couple got married as per Hindu rituals.
It was only after marrying Suchira that Mohanlal emerged as one of the biggest stars in the Malayalam film industry. The actor often credits his wife for his success. The couple has two children, Pranav Mohanlal and Vismaya. Pranav followed in the footsteps of his father and ventured into acting. After some initial roles as a child actor, Pranav made his debut as a lead actor in 2018 with the film, Aadhi.
