Ben Affleck is sharing his side of the story about his recent divorce from Jennifer Lopez for the April issue of GQ.
He spoke honestly about their relationship and the reality behind their split. “Part of it was, ‘Okay, if I’m going to participate in this, I want to try to do it in an honest way,’” he, explained about his involvement in the documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told.
He also praised Lopez for handling fame in ways he struggles with, saying, “She’s handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have.” Adding, “You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, “Well, I don’t like going out in the water.” ‘ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship.’ ”
Affleck reflected on how relationships evolve over time, noting, “As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things.”
He clarified that their breakup wasn’t caused by a dramatic event, stating, “There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships.”
He also emphasized his respect for Lopez: “I don’t mind talking about my personal life… as long as my actual feelings and intentions and beliefs are communicated, which I hope I was clear that really [Lopez] is somebody I have a lot of respect for.”
The two rekindled their romance in 2021, after ending their first engagement in 2003. They finally married in 2022 and then Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024, and it was finalized in January 2025.
