Chennai: Actor-turned politician Vijay launched a blistering attack on Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Friday, calling it a “fascist” party and comparing it with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), at his party’s first general body meeting held near Mahabalipuram on the outskirts of Chennai. “You keep saying that the BJP is a fascist party. But you are also equally fascist as them,” he said at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) meeting, which also marked the party’s first anniversary and start of its second year.
The TVK leader declared that the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections would be a fight between only two parties. “One is DMK and the other one is TVK,” he said.
Vijay took aim at Chief Minister M.K. Stalin with a dig at what he called the DMK’s dynasty politics, saying politics is about the welfare of all families and not just one family. ”What is politics? It means all the families in the state should be happy. But here it is like only one family is happy in politics,” he said, referring to the DMK.
He also accused Stalin of obstructing his party cadres from meeting him. “Right from the party’s conference to the book release event, to the second year inaugural event, you have been creating obstacles to prevent me from meeting my party workers,” Vijay said.
“You were saying that a few who entered politics yesterday are dreaming of becoming a CM. You also said it would never happen. If so, then why are you creating so many obstacles?” Vijay asked Stalin.
He also warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tread carefully in Tamil Nadu, especially on the contentious delimitation issue. “We understood your intentions when you introduced ‘One Nation, One Election’. I request Modi ji to handle the people of Tamil Nadu carefully. They have taught lessons to many people,” he said.
He also clarified that his political rival is the DMK, while the BJP is his ideological rival.
In the general body meeting, the TVK passed 17 resolutions, including a demand to continue the two-language formula and defer the delimitation process indefinitely.
The other resolutions pressed the state and central government on various issues, including a demand to withdraw the Waqf amendment bill and to conduct a caste census.
One resolution also opposed the centralisation of power by the Centre and called for decentralisation and greater power-sharing with the states. “Power should be shared with the states. When Prime Minister Modi was the state CM, he spoke for states’ rights and after becoming the prime minister, he is reducing the powers of the states and giving them to the Centre,” the resolution said.
Another resolution sought to resolve the fishermen’s issue in the state permanently.
“Fishermen have been attacked by the Sri Lankan navy for the past 40 years and it’s continuing even now. The central government and state government have not thought of any permanent solution for the issue. The Prime Minister should consider Tamil fishermen equal to Gujarat and other state fishermen,” the party resolution said.
Addressing his party workers as comrades, Vijay also raised concerns about the law and order situation and women’s safety in Tamil Nadu. “Law and order situation is at its worst in the state. When we talk about women’s safety, we cannot even speak about the things women in our state suffer. The only way to keep law and order in control and ensure the safety of women is to send the corrupt government back to their home,” he said.
He also appealed to his party workers to keep meeting the people and ensure that their day–to-day problems are solved. “Once that is done, we can get the confidence of the people and win the election,” he stated.
TVK’s general secretary (election) Aadhav Arjuna also addressed the gathering and accused the DMK of reducing the stature of its alliance partner, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi.
“By taking the strong parties into your alliance, you destroy them. That is how you destroyed Vaiko’s MDMK and now you are in the process of destroying VCK. The party’s leader, Thirumavalavan, should realise this,” he said.
