Dilwale was one of the biggest hits of the year it was released. The romantic action film was released in 1994 and starred Ajay Devgn, Sunil Shetty, Raveena Tandon, and Paresh Rawal in key roles. Raveena’s role was initially offered to Divya Bharti. However, her sudden demise led to the change. Now, over three decades later, the writer of the film has shared some insight into each cast member.
Karan Razdan revealed he was told he would cry on Dilwale’s release day
In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, Karan Razdan shared some insights into the cast of his hit film, Dilwale and the film’s making. He revealed that once he was done shooting almost eight per cent of the film, he decided to show the film to filmmaker, Subhash Ghai. Karan revealed that Subhash’s reaction to the film left him shocked. He stated:
“He told me, ‘If you want to cry, cry right now because you are anyway going to cry on the film’s release day.’ I asked why. He asked me, ‘Do you have any grudge against Ajay Devgn? He is not even presentable as a mad person.’ He couldn’t comment much on Suniel Shetty as he was relatively new in the industry. On the other hand, Raveena Tandon had delivered about 12 flops. People used to tease me, saying, ‘Tervi aapki hogi.'”
Ajay Devgn’s role in Dilwale was originally written for Shah Rukh Khan
Ajay Devgn and Raveena Tandon starrer, Dilwale won the hearts of its audience. However, the screenwriter of the film, Karan Razdan, initially wanted Shah Rukh Khan to be in the film. In the same interview, he recalled the reason Shah Rukh Khan didn’t do the film.
Karan revealed that King Khan did not like the ending of the film. However, when he decided not to change the end, SRK dropped out of the race. He added that even the filmmaker, Subhash Ghai, wasn’t convinced by the film. Karan can be quoted as saying:
“The role that I gave to Ajay Devgn in the film Dilwale was originally written for Shah Rukh Khan. I went to his house to narrate the story, and he liked the script. He just told me one thing, ‘Karan, at the end, the heroine should go with the other guy.’ I refused to change my film’s end. He refused to do it.”

Shah Rukh Khan admitted that sticking to the original script was the right decision
While Shah Rukh Khan refused to do the film, Ajay Devgn accepted the role readily. However, it was not his role but the role that Suniel Shetty eventually played. Karan Razdan, in the same conversation, also recalled how, after the film’s release, Shubhash Ghai called to congratulate him and told him Shah Rukh Khan had admitted to him that his suggestion to change the script was not great. He revealed that the actor even acknowledged that Karan had done the right thing by sticking to his original story.
