A day before the earthquake, Min Aung Hling addressed the soldiers on the 80th anniversary of the armed forces parade. He announced that the national election would go ahead in December – one vote that the human rights groups are already saying “Sham”.
Under the military rule, there is no comprehensible way for the elections of any integrity in the country, while the civil war continues.
In the last four decades, the military -backed parties have been rejected heavyly by the voters of Myanmar in the last four decades. This includes the most recent elections held in 2020, won National league of democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
While the world must be welcomed – and immediately respond – Min Aung Hling’s invitation to international assistance, it does not mean that the past has been forgotten. Thousands of innocent people have lost their lives as a result of the unnecessary and devastating 2021 coup of the army.
If the NLD remained in the government, the country would have been more infinitely ready to deal with the results of this earthquake. Once again, the army’s cruel governance – and Trump’s Dracian assistance cut – would have no doubt that there will be more unnecessary suffering and deaths.
