Kamal Haasan’s personal life has been a topic of interest among his fans. While they love his acting, writing talents and movie choices, his relationships have been the centre of attention for years now. Kamal had been married twice and was in a live-in relationship for over 13 years. His name is linked to several actresses, but the only other relationship that he has acknowledged is with the legendary South Indian actress, Srividya.
Srividya revealed that she was heartbroken after her breakup with Kamal Haasan
Kamal Haasan and Srividya fell in love in the early 1970s. They were starting their careers in the industry and finding their footing in the film world. However, their love story never had a happy ending. The couple eventually parted ways, leaving both heartbroken. This is speculated to be the first serious relationship for both Kamal and Srividya, and the fact neither of them found lasting love speaks volumes about how deeply they were affected by the failure of their relationship.
Srividya once spoke about her relationship with Kamal Haasan and revealed how the breakup had emotionally scarred her. During a chat with Kairali TV, the actress asserted that they were deeply in love, and not just their families but also the entire film industry knew about their relationship. She added how she initially felt like her life was over after they broke up. Srividya was quoted as saying:
“I was blank initially; I felt that my life was over. Our families wanted us to get married. I was like a pet to Kamal’s father. Slowly, Kamal started becoming a big hero.”
Srividya revealed what led to the end of her and Kamal Haasan’s relationship
In the same conversation, Sriviya recalled what led to their breakup. She revealed that Kamal Haasan wanted her to wait for him, but she was unwilling to delay marriage any further. She added that she didn’t want to do anything against their family’s wishes. However, Kamal flared up, asking if it was Srividya’s final decision. She was quoted as saying:
“He left and did not even call me for quite some time. Then one day, he came over to our house. Seeing us, my mother approached and asked if she could express her opinion on the matter. She said, ‘Why don’t you two wait for 4-5 years? You seem to be very sure of yourself. Kamal, you are supposed to become a great artist. You are going to become one of the greatest heroes in this industry. She, too, is talented and has the potential to become big. Eventually, you guys might come across even better people. At that time, you shouldn’t regret your current decisions. You both are only 22 now; why rush things? I think it is too young an age to get married.’ She was very correct.”
However, Kamal Haasan was enraged by what Srividya’s mother had to say and left immediately. This was the final nail in their relationship. Soon after, Kamal married Vani Ganapathy, leaving Srividya heartbroken. She recalled that she felt like a failure as a woman and kept thinking about what Vani had that she didn’t. Although they never became close friends afterwards, Kamal and Srividya always maintained a cordial relationship.

Kamal Haasan also spoke about his relationship with Srividya on Vijay TV’s Koffee with DD. He addressed his former ‘lover’ when he was shown a still of him and Srividya from director K Balachander’s 1975 film, Apoorva Raagangal. The film also marked Rajinikanth’s acting debut, in which Kamal and Srividya played a romantic pair. Talking about the same, he stated:
“While acting in this movie, I was 19. I don’t know whether the love we portrayed on screen spilt over into real life or not. But it remains in my heart even now. A relationship doesn’t have to culminate in marriage for it to be meaningful.”

After her painful break-up with Kamal Haasan, Srividya dated Bharathan. However, they couldn’t continue their relationship. Later, she fell in love with George Thomas, an assistant director of her Malayalam film, Teekkanal. The couple dated for a while and later got married on January 19, 1978. She got baptised before marriage and wanted to be a housewife. However, their financial issues forced her to return to the industry. She soon realised that she had made a mistake by marrying George. Their marriage ended in a bitter divorce in 1980.
