Nidhi Tewari, a young Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from Varanasi, has recently been making headlines for her prestigious job offer at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). After serving the PMO for more than three years, Nidhi has finally been appointed as the Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as per an official memorandum issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on March 29, 2025. Who is Nidhi Tewari?
Nidhi Tewari recently got appointed to take on the highly prestigious position of the next Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As a 2014-batch officer of the next Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Nidhi is currently serving as the Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). As per the announcement made by the DoPT, Ms Tewari’s new role will be co-terminus with her current PMO position, meaning it will end with her tenure or continue until further orders.
Nidhi Tewari originally hails from Varanasi, the very constituency that PM Modi has represented in Parliament since 2014. Talking about her achievements, Ms Tewari secured an impressive 96th rank in the 2013 Civil Services Examination, which testifies to her academic brilliance.
Before joining the Indian Foreign Serivices, Tewari used to work as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi while at the same time preparing for the UPSC exams. Considering the amount of knowledge and expertise that her new position demands, she is set to take on this crucial administrative role at a relatively young age.

Nidhi Tewari’s career in diplomacy
As the private secretary to the Prime Minister of India, diplomacy is crucial in Nidhi Tewari’s role, considering she will have to be involved in high-level communications, international relations, and coordination of policies. As a senior IFS officer, Nidhi will assist the PM in foreign policy matters and handle sensitive government matters.
Ms Tewari has a laudable career in diplomacy. She joined the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and served in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division, where she played a key role in India’s global diplomatic engagements. In 2022, she transitioned to the PMO as an Under Secretary and later got promoted to Deputy secretary. After joining the PMO, Ms Tewari was a part of the ‘Foreign and Security’ division, and her responsibilities included handling critical areas such as External Affairs, Atomic Energy, and Security Affairs, along with overseeing developments in the state of Rajasthan.
What will Nidhi Tewari’s salary be?
In her new position as the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, Nidhi Tewari’s salary will be based on Level 14 of the Pay Matrix, which is Rs 1,44,200 per month. In addition to her in-hand salary, she will also be given a house allowance, dearness allowance, and travel allowance. Putting everything together, her total earnings per month will be around Rs 2 lakh. This makes her annual salary around Rs 24 lakhs. Before Nidhi Tewari, this prestigious role was held by Vivek Kumar and Hardik Satishchandra Shah.
