Last week, the International Labor Organization (ILO) in its ‘World Social Protection Report (WSPR) 2024-26’ said that India’s social security coverage has doubled by 24.4 percent in 2021, to 48.8 percent in 2024.
Even the Union Labor Ministry stated that about 920 million people, or 65 percent of the population, now at least one form has been covered by social security, domestic workers are largely excluded from its purview. And this is because domestic work is deeply unorganized and uncontrolled.
The e -ram portal was introduced to create a national database of unorganized workers (NDUW) in August 2021 to provide social security to unorganized workers. The Ministry of Labor said, “By March 3, 2025, more than 30.68 crore unorganized workers have registered, of which 53.68% are women.”
Nikor explained, “E-terrain is a digital tool, which has at least acknowledged social security to unorganized workers. However, more domestic workers on this portal need to be a defined mechanism to place the ship on the portal,” Nicor explained.
