As Kapil continues to entertain fans, his on-screen chemistry with Sumona Chakravarti has made a special place in the hearts of fans. Their playful banter as husband and wife on Comedy Nights With Kapil deeply impacted viewers’ minds and made them an iconic comic duo to the extent that fans can’t get out of that perception. In a recent interview, Sumona Chakravarti shared how people mistake her for Kapil’s wife, which continued at his real-life wedding.
Sumona Chakravarti reveals people wished her at Kapil Sharma’s wedding
Sumona Chakravarti sat down for an interview with SCREEN and shared how her collaboration with Kapil brought her success and its impact. She revealed that people had a massive impact on her life, and people in India began to mistake her as his real-life wife. Sharing how she received wishes at his real-life wedding with Ginni Chatrath, Sumona said:
“Even after his (Kapil’s) marriage, whenever I have travelled, I had a few people congratulating me. In fact, at his wedding, people said, ‘Shadi Mubaraq’. I used to be like, ‘I am sorry, did y’all not read his wedding invite? Are y’all gatecrashing his wedding? Why would you congratulate me?'”
The actress explained that a similar incident occurred when she went for a morning run, and people began to whisper ‘Kapil ki biwi’. But, Sumona understands how the actors on TV are more popular for their roles. She shared that her success in a comedy show has been a double-edged sword for her, but it did help her buy a home in Mumbai. Recalling how she has received love across the world and not just in India, she said:
“The show has been dubbed in Thai. I was at a Thai restaurant, and it so happened that my local Indian-Thai friend came to me and said, ‘All the servers and host want to take a picture with you.’ They were all Thai. I wondered why, then they showed me the show’s clip.”

In the same conversation, Sumona shared that when she worked with Kapil Sharma and played the role of his wife and later his admirer, some people and media personnel often questioned why she was part of a misogynist show. For those unaware, Kapil’s character ‘Bitto’ often made insulting jokes about Sumona’s character of his wife, ‘Manju’. Recalling her reply to them, the actress said:
It’s a show! It’s a scripted show! What I really believe, and I’ve always told anyone who has questioned me, is that, first and foremost, it’s just acting. It’s just a TV show. Kapil is not insulting Sumona—there’s a difference. There’s a character, Bittu, and his wife, Manju. It’s literally a reflection of what happens in our environment.”
