Located in Rangardi district, 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibovali is adjacent to the University of Hyderabad, in which no clear boundary separates both.
The issue arose when 400 acres of land was auctioned by TGIIC for large -scale projects, aimed at construction of IT parks and urban living places.
While the state government claims the only ownership of the land, the University of Hyderabad (UOH) claims the Joint Action Committee (JAC), although not officially documented, land is part of a large area allotted to the public university for educational use.
To understand the conflict, we need to go back in a few decades.
In 1974, before the establishment of Telangana, the Andhra Pradesh government allotted 2,300 acres of land to Hyderabad University under the instructions of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. However, the legal rights of the land were never transferred to the university.
According to sources, the university administration has been writing to the state government for the last 15 years, which requests the university for transfer of ownership of land ownership (including disputed 400 acres), but has not received any response.
This is not the first time the state government has used part of the land allotted for non-educational purposes. Over the years, classes have been allocated to public utilities, roads, a sports stadium and more, leading to gradual friction.
The Andhra Pradesh government had allotted 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibovali on 13 January 2004 for the development of sports facilities. However, when the project was not physical, the government canceled the allocation on 21 November 2006.
After a long legal battle, IMG Academies Bharata Pvt Ltd filed a petition in the High Court, which ruled in favor of the government on 24 March 2024.
Subsequently, on 19 June 2024, TGIIC proposed to acquire 400 acres of land for IT Park. The Principal Secretary of the Revenue Department approved the transfer of land and captured TGIIC in advance.
The haste of this land for these projects intensified the struggle between the Telangana government and the university.
