On Thursday, Obama, speaking at Hamilton College, slammed Trump’s efforts to reshape the federal government, crackdown on immigration, and intimidate the media and legal institutions.
“Imagine if I had done any of this,” Obama remarked, later adding, “It’s unimaginable that the same parties that are silent now would have tolerated behavior like that from me, or a whole bunch of my predecessors.”
He expressed particular alarm over Trump’s infringement on rights, citing threats to universities and law firms. “The idea that a White House can say to law firms, if you represent parties that we don’t like, we’re going to pull all our business or bar you from representing people effectively,” Obama said, calling it a direct attack on fundamental American values.
Kamala Harris, who was endorsed by Obama, spoke at the Leading Women Defined Summit that same day. She echoed these sentiments and acknowledged the fear Trump’s second term has sparked.
“We are seeing organizations stay quiet. We are seeing those who are capitulating to clearly unconstitutional threats,” she said, before adding with a smile, “I’m not here to say I told you so.” She highlighted the contagious nature of both fear and courage, reminding the crowd, “Courage is also contagious.”
