Flavor Flav, hip-hop’s favorite hype man, has shared a somber update about his sobriety journey.
In a statement to his fans, who have supported him through his quest to live substance-free, Flav revealed he had a setback. “I briefly relapsed,” he confessed, emphasizing the importance of holding himself “publicly accountable.”
The 66-year-old explained, “I remain authentic to who I am, and a large part of the past 4.5 years for me has been my sobriety journey. I think I’ve been an inspiration to many that if I could get sober, anyone can do it.” He admitted that despite his progress, “just when you think it’s easy, it ain’t,” adding that his relapse was a reminder that he is “a human being who makes mistakes,” and it doesn’t make him “a bad person.” He hopes his fans continue to support his choice to stay sober.
Flav went on to share, “I went back to Day 1, again. Time didn’t stop, my journey continues.” Last October, he celebrated the fourth anniversary of his sobriety, noting, “My mental health is an important part of my sobriety journey,” and offered to pay for therapy app subscriptions for the day.
In 2023 the “Flavor of Love” star shared that at the height of his addiction, he spent “$2,400 to $2,600 a day… for six years straight” on drugs. He’s also shared reminders for the sober community, like encouraging options like mocktails or non-alcoholic beer during the holidays.
