Several Chaka Khan and Prince records may soon be headed our way.
The soul star has revealed she’s preparing to release a collection of songs she recorded with Prince before his untimely death. The collaboration began in 1984 when Khan’s cover of Prince’s “I Feel For You” revitalized her career. In the late 1990s, she signed with Prince’s NPG Records and toured together as co-headliners. In a recent chat with The Guardian, Khan recalled their unique partnership.
“It was like working with myself, more than anyone else I’ve worked with. Sia’s bringing up a close third, behind Prince and Miles Davis,” Khan explained.
She went on to describe how the late star’s creative process left her amazed.
“Prince just grabbed ideas out of the air and left you wondering: ‘Where did you get that?’” she recounted.
Khan shared that they created numerous tracks together, but red tape had previously kept them from being released. Now, with those obstacles cleared, Khan is set to drop a CD featuring their music, which also includes contributions from Larry Graham.
It’s unknown when Khan will unveil this project. However, it could arrive this summer as she embarks on an arena tour across North America, concluding with her only UK performance at the Hampton Court Palace Festival on June 18th, 2025.
Prince’s estate has not spoken out about the release of the music. In the years since Prince’s death, they have blocked other projects from seeing the light of day, so there is a chance Khan’s collaborations with the rocker could face more hurdles.
