When tariffs are on the spot, Eam S Jaishankar emphasized that the current situation may have created the circumstances for such a serious conversation, but India was engaged in a trade transaction even during the first term of President Trump.
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar spoke on Wednesday and responded to a discussion on tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Speaking on the news of the 18 Bharata summit, Yashankar stated that India’s strategy was understood and that it would be engaged in the United States under a bilateral trade agreement that could complete this fall.
Asked about the strategy of India to combat tariffs and their impact, EAM replied: “I don’t think we can talk about the impact because we don’t know.” Yashankar said India’s strategy was to interact with the US in the field of bilateral trade agreement.
“Our strategy is quite understandable; we decided that we would attract the Trump administration earlier in this set of questions, and we were very open to them, constructive with them, as with us. What we agreed to do was try to agree on a bilateral trade agreement to fall this year.”
He further added: “As far as I know, and I could have been corrected here, I think we are the only country after President Trump resumed the presidency for the second time that he actually reached such an understanding in principle.”
Yashankar noted that since each country is tariff, each modeling its own strategy to combat the United States. “In our case, our strategy has a goal that needs to find out if you can actually fight this situation by concluding a bilateral trade agreement, and I have to add that it is interesting, it has long been our goal.”
When the tariffs are on the spot, Yashankar emphasized that the current situation may have created the circumstances for such a serious conversation, but India was engaged in a trade transaction even during the first term of President Trump.
He emphasized: “Thus, from an Indian point of view, the development of a bilateral deal with the United States is not a negative and undesirable situation, on the contrary, this is what has long become our goal.”
EAM has said that the US Prime Minister has visited bilateral trade talks and saw several rounds of classes. “We had more discussions with Americans over the last six weeks than I suspect that we have Europeans over the last two years,” he said.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (local time) that the countries affected by the US tariffs seek to negotiate and conclude transactions with him, proposing to do everything to secure the agreement. Speaking at the National Republican Committee on Tuesday evening (local time), Trump said he was a better negotiator than a congress.
Trump’s comments were made in the context of his administration’s tariff policy, especially with countries such as China. He emphasized his ability to negotiate better transactions than Congress, citing an example of 104% tariffs in China.
