Another day, another wedding drama. In a shocking turn of events straight out of a Bollywood plot twist, a bride-to-be from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, got the biggest shock of her life when her soon-to-be-husband ran away days before their wedding- and that, too, with her own mother! Reportedly, the marriage was supposed to take place within just ten days.
Groom-to-be elopes with would-be mother-in-law
20-year-old Shivani, a resident under Aligarh’s Madrak police station, was set to tie the knot with Rahul on April 16, 2025. Everything, from wedding invitations to party arrangements had been complete. Relatives were invited, and celebrations were in full swing in the bride-to-be’s house. However, everything fell apart on April 6, 2025, when the groom, Rahul, disappeared along with Shivani’s 40-year-old mother, Anita, without a trace.
Shivani and her father got an even greater shock when they realised that Anita had run off with gold and silver jewellery worth Rs. 5 lakh and an additional Rs. 3.5 lakh cash meant for the wedding. A visibly devastated Shivani told the media:
“I was supposed to marry Rahul on April 16, and my mother eloped with him on Sunday. Rahul and my mother used to talk on the phone a lot over the past three to four months. We had Rs 3.5 lakh in cash in the almirah and jewellery worth over Rs 5 lakh. She has done everything he asked him to. She has not left even Rs 10 behind. My mother has taken all our money.”
Shivani’s father had suspicions about his wife and Rahul
Shivnani’s father, Jitendra Kumar, had only recently returned to his home for the wedding preparations from Bengaluru, where he runs a business. He had allegedly grown suspicious when he noticed the unnatural closeness between his wife and his daughter’s fiance, claiming that the two talked for 20-22 hours a day. Jitendra said:
“That man would not speak to my daughter but would keep talking to my wife. I live in Bengaluru to run my business. I had heard that, for the past three months, they would talk to each other for 22 hours a day. I was suspicious but did not say anything because the wedding was around the corner. Anita left with the man on April 6 and took all our cash and jewellery.”

Jitendra further added that he tried to contact both Anita and Rahul multiple times, but their phones were switched off. Rahul eventually answered one of Jitendra’s calls and told him to forget about Anita, claiming that she had suffered for 20 years in the marriage, before switching off his phone. Jitendra shared:
“I called Anita several times, but she had switched off her phone. I called the man too, but he kept denying that she was with him. Hours later, he finally said that I had troubled my wife for 20 years and that I should forget about her. Their phones were switched off after that.”
Police are investigating the case
The heartbroken father and daughter now seek only the return of their stolen money and jewellery. A missing persons report has been lodged at Madrak police station. Police are tracking the duo’s phone locations and have sent a team to Uttarakhand, Rahul’s last known location.
