‘Girls Will Be Girls’ cast Kani Kushruti, Preeti Panigrahi and Kesav Binoy join actor-producers Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal to talk about the film Kiroem.
“I personally really feel for the character of Anila (Kusruti),” says Panigrahi, “and through this film I have gained a lot of respect and forgiveness from my side towards my mother.
‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is set in a boarding school, showing how young girls are controlled for their clothing and their behaviour. Speaking about the same, Chadha says, “Around the world, the onus of veiling is on girls. And it doesn’t really matter what you’re wearing. This scene (of a conversation between a teacher and Panigrahi’s character Meera) also highlights how misogyny can be so internalized that those words can come out of a woman’s mouth.
Kusruti talks about how her upbringing was different from most and how her parents supported her and prepared her to ‘negotiate with the patriarchy’.
Speaking about the decision to opt for a direct-to-digital release for ‘Girls Will Be Girls’, Chadha says, “Audiences just want to watch a good film, even if they want to spend Rs 500 and watch it in a cinema. Or watch it at home. They’re paying us for their time.”
“The audience has matured quicker than the industry,” she says.
