More than 18 lakh new voters added in 78 assembly constituencies – BJP won 68 of these
While the Election Commission rejected Congress’s allegation of an average increase of 50,000 voters in 50 assembly constituencies as “factually incorrect”. The Quint It has found that of the 40,81,229 new voters added between July-November 2024, more than 18 lakh were concentrated in just 13 parliamentary constituencies. We have taken parliamentary constituencies because the total number of voters assembly-wise at the time of Lok Sabha elections is not available on the Election Commission website.
All these constituencies saw an increase of more than 1 lakh voters in five months.
These parliamentary constituencies are made up of 78 assembly constituencies. Of these 78 assembly constituencies, nine were won by the opposition MVA alliance, one by AIMIM, while 68 seats were won by the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.
However, it is pertinent to note that the benefits of Mahayuti cannot be attributed only to the increase in the number of voters.
In all 13 Lok Sabha seats, while the BJP-led alliance significantly increased its absolute vote tally in the assembly elections compared to the Lok Sabha elections held five months ago, in three constituencies (Kalyan, Shirur and Nagpur), the MVA alliance lost its absolute vote tally. Vote numbers also increased.
Moreover, in many constituencies, as the BJP and allies gained in terms of absolute votes, the MVA alliance suffered significant vote losses. Therefore, it is possible that the Mahayuti may have benefited due to changes in MVA voters between the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the subsequent assembly elections.
Similarly, in Maval parliamentary constituency, which also has six assembly seats. 1,69,288 New voters were added in Maharashtra between the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. During this period, Mahayuti’s absolute vote count increased 2,17,177 While MVA votes decreased 1,46,683 Vote. Without matching voter lists, it is difficult to guess where Mahayuti got its benefits from.
Therefore, it is difficult to estimate whether the Mahayuti gained from new voters or the MVA suffered a loss – or both.
