The largest company among these is Cognizant, while other companies like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL, Tech Mahindra, Mphasis are among the top 10 tech companies with certified H1B visa applications. The vast majority of their H1B workers come from India, and the overwhelming majority are brought in for IT roles.
If they were to hire a local technical expert, they would have to pay around $175,000-200,000 per year. H1B jobs offered by India-based IT companies pay almost half the salary. Most jobs on offer fall between $80,000-120,000.
It’s not very common in the United States. In purchasing power parity terms, this is around ₹1.5-2 lakh per month, which is not much more than what a mid-level IT employee earns in India. But that’s another matter in terms of the official exchange rate. If an Indian worker, on an H1B visa, works for the full six years under the visa conditions, and manages to save 25 per cent of their income, they will return home with savings of ₹1.0-1.5 crore.
Therefore, getting a temporary job in the US on an H1B visa can make a significant difference in the life of a middle-class techie in a relatively short period of time. That’s why, the promise of ‘onshore’ jobs in the US is a great way to lure talent into the IT sector. This also forces IT companies to offer comparable ‘offshore’ salaries to retain talent.
In other words, even though H1B visas offer relatively low salaries compared to the cost of living in the United States, they far outweigh IT salaries at home in India. Of course, this is only true for those in mid to senior positions. Entry level IT salaries are now extremely low; They have remained more or less the same for a decade. But people stay, because once an IT worker gets 7-8 years of experience, they can expect to earn higher salaries, or even move to the US on an H1B visa.
