While Hasina is in India, it appears that she has taken great care of her relatives in the UK. Siddiq is under pressure over possession of several properties, including a two-bedroom flat near King’s Cross and another house in London’s posh Hampstead.
Shadow Home Office minister Matt Vickers said: “Allegations like this against any member of the government are unacceptable, but even more worrying given that Tulip Siddiq is Starmer’s anti-corruption minister.”
The Financial Times On Friday, 3 January, it was revealed that the King’s Cross flat had been purchased in 2001 for £195,000 by Abdul Motalif, a developer with links to members of Hasina’s Awami League. Siddiq became the owner of that flat in 2004 without paying any price.
The Sunday Times Then revealed that she lived in a separate Hampstead property, which had been bought by Moin Ghani, the lawyer representing Hasina’s government, and transferred to Siddiq’s sister.
Siddiq is also renting a £2.1 million house in East Finchley owned by Abdul Karim, an executive member of the UK wing of the Awami League. Reportedly, the mother of the tulips is in a golders’ greenhouse owned by an offshore trust of the son of one of Sheikh Hasina’s billionaire political advisors.
Labor officials said Siddiq will not travel to China with a Treasury delegation led by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves this week as planned, and will instead “remain behind to assist with inquiries”.
