When you come from one of the poorest states in India, where the private sector offers limited opportunities for employment and stable livelihood, you are left with only two options – either migrate out of the state or try for a government job. to do.
I chose the latter option – to study diligently and get a government job, so that I could be close to my family and support them. However, this dream also seems to have been stolen, not just because I have to compete with lakhs of other candidates, but because the exam has to face controversies one after the other.
No reward for guessing – this is the story of Bihar and its exam conducting body, Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC).
On December 13, when I appeared for the preliminary examination of the 70th BPSC Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) in Saharsa, news of an alleged paper leak emerged from Bapu Auditorium Centre, Patna.
While the Commission had initially denied the allegations, it later decided to conduct re-examination only for those students who appeared on January 4 at the said center citing ‘rumours of paper leak’ at the venue Were.
“Keeping in mind the interests of the students, the Commission has decided to conduct the re-examination as soon as possible,” read the notification dated December 19, 2024.
My question to the Commission is: Why order re-examination for just one centre, when we all know that, in this digital age, if a question paper is leaked from one centre, it will immediately be reported to 911 centers in Bihar. Can spread to any one of the. With just one click?
‘Is this how you treat your students?’
And how are you dealing with the demands of the students? By slapping, lathi charge and water cannons?
On the day of examination, a student was seen demanding re-examination. slap An incident captured on camera by District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh at a center in Patna.
When we were sitting peacefully on 29th December dharna On this issue, police brutality reached its peak in Gandhi Maidan, Patna. lathe and water splashes Upon us during a cold evening.
First, you fail to conduct the exams properly, and then you resort to beating up students who raise concerns. is it fair?
‘Is this what we deserve?’
This is not the first time that BPSC has failed to conduct an examination smoothly.

A similar incident took place on 27 December 2020 during the 66th BPSC CCE at a center in Aurangabad. Accepting the discrepancy, the Commission conducted the re-examination on 14 February 2021.
-
On 9 May 2022, the 67th BPSC CCE was canceled minutes before the exam after the question paper was leaked and widely circulated on WhatsApp and Telegram groups.
-
The BPSC Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE-3) held on 15 March 2024 was also canceled due to another paper leak, leading to the re-examination to be conducted between 19 July to 22 July 2024.
I can continue the list of exams which BPSC failed to conduct properly. Do the students of Bihar deserve this?
‘Examination Burden’
Many of us come from families that struggle to even afford to appear for these examinations. Most of the time, the centers allotted to us are outside our home districts, requiring us to travel by train or bus a day in advance, as well as arrange for accommodation.
Many times, a student is unable to afford a hotel room and is forced to spend the night sleeping at the railway station or bus stand.
I graduated with BSc in Mathematics (Hons) from Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga in 2021. With no campus placements, I was left with only two options: either look for jobs in big cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, etc., or prepare for government exams.
For the last 3-4 years, I have been preparing for various government job exams, but have not been successful. The vacancies are limited, while the number of applicants for each exam is in lakhs.
In this background, when we have to endure the repeated failures of the Commission in conducting smooth and fair examinations, we feel no less than cheated.
What do we do? Where should we go? Even when limited opportunities arise for us to secure livelihood, the examination conducting bodies fail time and again to conduct the examination without anomalies.
BPSC must understand that, as a student, we face immense pressure of livelihood, career and many family responsibilities. This should give us an opportunity to re-appear in the examination free from anomalies, giving us a fair chance to compete on a level playing field.
