In Kohli’s case there are a few factors working together, a combination of which we have seen recently in Australia and elsewhere during his career.
A comprehensive examination of Kohli’s technique reveals two fundamental flaws – in his set-up, and in his trigger movement.
But first, for starters, what do we mean by ‘set-up’? A combination of three factors, namely:
-
Stance – How the batsman stands at the crease, i.e. the position of his body.
-
Grip – How he is holding the bat.
-
Backlift – The angle and height at which he holds the bat.
Kohli’s problems arise from his stance. Not that there is any proven right approach in a game where both the dogmatic Sachin Tendulkar and the bizarrely eccentric Shivnarine Chanderpaul can succeed.
However, each stance has its own pros and cons.
