Farm union leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s hunger strike entered its 50th day on Tuesday, January 14. According to the doctors who examined him, his health condition is deteriorating. Dallewal, 70, is suffering from cancer and has refused to seek medical attention during his hunger strike.
Dallewal, a resident of Faridkot district of Punjab, is the convenor of the United Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and is on a hunger strike from November 26, 2024, demanding legal guarantee of minimum support price for crops. Farm unions say that the central government had made this promise in response to the farmers’ protests of 2020-21 and now it is going back on its promise.
The question is why there has been no response from the Center till now? This is in contrast to its approach during the 2020-21 farmers’ protests, during which the Modi government had appointed senior ministers to negotiate with farm union leaders.
Interestingly, the Punjab BJP unit contacted Akal Takht and urged Dallewal to give up his hunger strike. In response, Dallewal said that he should contact PM Modi and not Akal Takht. Read about why Punjab BJP did this in the last part of this article.
But first, a change in the strategy of Modi government. There are basically three reasons for this.
