In Delhi, responding to the allegation of manipulation of AAP’s electoral roll, ECI earlier stated that each application for addition of names from the role or deletion has “carefully examined”.
The claims of voter roll manipulation have been repeatedly raised by various political parties.
In February 2024, the BJP lodged a complaint with ECI that West Bengal had 1.6 million fake voters. In January 2024, similar issues were raised in Andhra Pradesh when the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the BJP lodged a complaint on the ‘fake name’ in the list of voters of the state. When he went to Maharashtra elections in November 2024, the Congress and other opposition parties raised the issue again.
According to the ECI rules, the list of dore-to-door survey, field verification, performance and claims and objections, supervision and list of random checks is required for updates or addition of names. This includes draft and sharing the final election rolls with political parties. There is also a rigid standard operating process (SOP) for the deletion of names.
The draft and final rolls are hosted on the website of the District Election Officer (DEO) and the role is displayed in the place boards of the nominated polling stations and the Election Registration Officer (ERO) offices.
During the continuous update period, monthly pooling of the list of additions, deletion and modifications is also published on the website of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
