Veteran actor, Deb Mukherjee, father of filmmaker, Ayan Mukherji, breathed his last at the age of 83 due to age-related complications. The news of his demise has shaken the Bollywood industry, and everyone is making their way back to Mumbai to pay their last respect to the late actor. Bollywood power couple, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor were spotted arriving back in Mumbai, leaving behind their Alibaug celebrations after receiving the heartbreaking news. We also spotted Deb Mukherjee’s niece, Kajol, arrive at his residence, followed by filmmaker, Karan Johar.
Alia and Ranbir cut their trip short to stand by Ayan Mukherjee
After her pre-birthday celebration with the media, Alia Bhatt left for Alibaug with her husband, Ranbir Kapoor, to celebrate Holi and her birthday. However, after learning of their dear friend, Ayan’s tragic loss, Alia and Ranbir cut their trip short and returned to Mumbai, paying tribute to the late actor. Their friendship with Ayan Mukerji goes back a long way, with Ayan directing both of them in the 2022 hit Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva.
Deb Mukherjee’s niece, Kajol was also spotted arriving at the late actor’s residence along with her mother, veteran actress Tanuja, to pay their last respects. Filmmaker Karan Johar was also seen visiting Ayan Mukerji’s house to offer his condolences.
Deb Mukherjee’s final rites scheduled for today in Mumbai
Deb Mukherjee passed away on March 14, 2025, at 9:30 am, due to age-related health complications. His funeral is set to take place at 4 PM at Pawan Hans Crematorium, Juhu. Several close friends and family members from the Mukerjee-Samarth family are expected to attend, including Kajol, Ajay Devgn, Rani Mukerji, Tanuja, and Tanisha. Bollywood big names like Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh are also likely to pay their respects.

Deb Mukherjee was part of Bollywood’s legendary Mukherjee-Samarth family. He was the son of filmmaker Sashadhar Mukherjee, and he worked both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. The veteran actor starred in films like Abhinetri, Ek Bar Mooskura Do, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, and Kaminey. Despite not achieving the same level of stardom as his brother Joy Mukherjee, Deb left an indelible mark on the industry. He was also deeply involved in the family’s Durga Puja celebrations in North Bombay, often spotted clicking pictures with his nieces, Kajol, Rani and Tanisha Mukherjee.
