In a shocking twist 30 years in the making, the family of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez’s killer is now blaming the singer for her own death.
As the infamous Yolanda Saldívar awaits a parole decision later this month, her family is making a bold claim: Selena’s actions led to the tragic shooting.
“[Yolanda] knows what she did was wrong and she takes responsibility for it. But she was reacting to the way she was confronted,” a family member told The New York Post. The anonymous source added, “[Selena] came at her really aggressively. She was so thrown off with how forceful Selena was being; everything happened so fast. If Selena had confronted her differently, this never would have happened.”
Saldívar, now 64, is serving a life sentence for the 1995 murder of the Tejano icon. She has long maintained the shooting was accidental and even suggested Selena was suicidal prior to her death.
In “Selena and Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them,” Saldívar lamented, “I was convicted by public opinion even before my trial started.” Despite multiple appeals, her sentence has remained unchanged.
Her time behind bars has been fraught with danger. Former inmate Yesenia Dominguez recalled, “Everyone was always like, ‘Let me have five minutes with that b***h.’ Everyone wanted to get justice for Selena.”
Saldívar’s family remains supportive but worries about her future. “We have never forsaken her. But I don’t know where she’s going to get a job. Who will hire her?”
A parole board decision is expected by the end of the month.
